Description
In 1878 the attention of the Post Master General was drawn to an invention by Mr. Vaile of New Zealand, of a machine for cancelling stamps. The Post Office asked to see examples of his cancellations and a number of pre-cancelled examples were produced by Vaile for Post Office consideration. The few produced were cancelled by a New Zealand cancel for 1874. Two examples, one on ½d. Stationery Post Card and one on a plain envelope. These designs were rejected; rare forerunners, documented in the GPO Archives. Machine Cancels.
