SG275 1911 1d. Aniline Pink. Harrison. P.14.

£240.00

Exceptionally fine used on Picture Post Card of the S. S. SUEVIC from which it was posted then sent from SOUTH AFRICA to VAUD (Switzerland) cancelled by Cape Town c.d.s. for 8. DEC. 11. with framed “PAQUEBOT” below. Scarce stamp used at sea!

In 1907 the ship ran aground on the rocks of Maenheere Reef, a quarter of a mile off The Lizard. The ship had been built with watertight compartments which enabled salvagers to separate the damaged section with explosive charges leaving it to break up on the rocks… the undamaged stern was now free from the rocks and managed to steam in reverse to Southampton. A new 212-foot bow section was built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast and towed to Southampton were the two sections were joined.
